NEGRO DESCANSO DE LAS AGUAS
(BLACK REPOSE OF THE WATERS)
Galería Patricia Ready
Santiago, Chile
2024
Black Repose of the Waters was a site specific installation constituted by four tons of fishing nets and ropes collected in the southern region of Los Lagos, Chile. These materials are the waste produced by the salmon and mussel farming industries operating in the same region.
In a previous exhibition, called Flotation and destruction (2021), the materials were eroded buoys discarded by the salmon farming industry in the Chiloé archipelago. Here, nets and ropes articulate a submerged landscape above the flotation level, a scene of polymeric ruins where the strange and the terrifying unite. This installation seeks to create conscience about the tragedy faced by the ocean and fishermen due to the pollution generated by large scale farming and the irreversible damage inflicted on local ecosystems.
Black Repose of the Waters was thought as an ephemeral piece. The materials that made up the installation: polypropylene, polyamide 6 and high-density polyethylene, were recycled after the exhibition ended.
